Why Hire a Graphic Designer?

Question Graphic

Some small business owners believe that hiring a professional graphic designer is one advertising & marketing expense that they can avoid. Here's five reasons why that type of thinking could lead you down the wrong path.

  1. A designer saves time - You know your job and do it well. A graphic designer is a professional who knows their field. They know about things like bleed and trap, type-safety and imposition so that you don't have to. A graphic designer can turn your ideas into reality in a short time, leaving you free to do what you do best.
  2. Improves your image - We've all seen business cards prepared on a home printer using perforated paper and the impression they leave. Well designed advertising and marketing materials will convey an image to your prospective customers of a professional company that they can trust.
  3. Stand out in a crowd - Every day we're bombarded by thousands of advertisements all vying for our attention. Your best defense against becoming a part of the noise is through great design that captures your audience's attention.
  4. Knows the software - Even if you have professional design software, knowing how to use it quickly, properly and tastefully is another thing entirely.
  5. Save money - If your art file is not prepared precisely the way it needs to be for printing, you may find that it will cost more to have a commercial printing company "fix" the art file than it would have been to simply hire a professional to prepare proper "print-ready" art files in the first place.

Creating properly prepared digital artwork for a commercial printer is not rocket science, but there are many concepts to understand and follow to be successful. Failing to do so could cost you money.

The cost could be minor, such as an additional proof, assuming the printer notices the error before going to press. They may need to "fix it" for you at their hourly rate if the problem is beyond your knowledge and skill.

Worse still, you could receive printing that you find unusable. When you are providing artwork to a printing company, you are taking on the responsibility of providing artwork that is correct. There are MANY issues to consider that you may be unfamiliar with: ink trapping, photo resolution, bleeds, re-screen moiré patterns, etc. A good printer may catch a major problem, but it is not their responsibility to do so.

I know of a designer that used a rescreen a previously printed image containing a halftone which is then screened again using a halftone process on a project and did not properly apply a Gaussian blur blurs an image to apply a softening effect to the halftone halftone example

simulating continuous tones by using dots
to simulate the tones between light and dark
image prior to printing. Because most commercial printers use a proofing system that uses a continuous tone the error did not show up on the proof which was shown to the client. Approval was given to print the job. The printer stopped the job, noticing the resulting moiré a wavelike or checkered pattern where the two dot patterns overlap when rescreening the halftone image pattern in the image, so the job was not completed. BUT, the make-ready for the job was over $500, which the designer had to pay for.
