The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is the main international standards organization for the World Wide Web.
The W3C's mission is:
"To lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by
developing protocols and guidelines that ensure long-term
growth for the Web."
Since browsers also attempt to follow these standards, webmasters who write valid markup maximize the likelihood that their web pages will view with consistency across the various browsers.
One of the services offered by the W3C is a free MarkUp Validator
for webmaster to ensure that their sites comply with W3C standards.
The W3C also has a CSS Validator to check their CSS style sheets for standards compliance, as well as other validators and tools.
Many requests for help in webmaster blogs receive the reply:
"Your markup is FULL of errors. Fix your markup first and make sure it will validate with the W3C. Then, if the problem continues to persist, I'll take another look at it."
Many display issues in websites, as well as cross-browser viewing variations, are due to invalid markup.
