The process of a person searching on the internet using keywords is known as performing a web search query.

The results that a search engine returns are known as SERPs (search engine results pages).

Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) are comprised of two primary types:
Organic Search Results and Sponsored Results

  1. Organic Search Results - the organic results are the "natural" results of a web search query. They appear because of their relevance to the search terms (keywords) entered by the searcher. Statistic show that 80% of searchers ONLY click on the organic search results in most cases. Increasing web page rank for the organic search results is what Search Engine Optimization use of various techniques to improve
    a web site's ranking in the search engines     (SEO) focuses on.
  2. Sponsored Results - areas at the top and right of a web search query are paid search AdWords, or pay-per-click. AdWords are results in which a company pays a certain amount of money each time a searcher clicks on their link. The cost-per-click varies by how popular the keyword or keyword phrase is, and how much money companies are willing to pay for a particular keyword to obtain the sponsored link. Most people tend to avoid the sponsored links, and prefer the "natural" organic search results instead. Optimizing a website for AdWords is the primary focus of Search Engine Marketing (SEM).
